Serving Pets in Port Imperial, Weehawken, Fort Lee, Hoboken & North Bergen
Taking care of your pet’s oral health is critical for his or her overall well-being. According to the American Veterinary Dental Society (AVDS), 80% of dogs and 70% of cats show signs of oral disease by age 3, making it the most frequently diagnosed health problem for pets. Unfortunately, even with startlingly statistics like these, oral disease in pets still often goes undetected.
Oral disease begins with the build up of bacteria in your pet’s mouth. Combined with saliva and food particles that become lodged between the teeth and along the gum line, these bacteria then grow into plaque, which then turns into tartar. This tartar build up is the driving force behind periodontal disease (an inflammation of the supporting structures surrounding teeth, including bone and gums). If left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to an irreversible condition that affects cats and dogs of all ages.
Prevention Is Possible
Protecting pets from the dangers of oral disease begins with the pet owner, and the physical examination is the first and most important step.
At Edgewater Animal Hospital, we make dental care a focal point of our preventive care services. During your pet’s annual wellness exam, and as part of our stand-alone dental services, we will provide your dog or cat with:
- A complete dental examination and cleaning (using ultrasonic scaling and polishing)
- X-rays, as needed to assess the health (or level of disease) of the tooth’s roots
- Recommendations for cleaning schedules and techniques
- Anesthesia as needed
- Home dental care information
If we can be of service for your pet’s dental and health care needs, please contact our clinic to schedule an appointment.
